to R&D or not to R&D?

‘To do a common thing uncommonly well,
brings success’ – H.J. Heinz

The design of the Heinz Innovation Centre is inspired on the company, it’s history and the vision on Research & Development. The building creates three different landscapes for all activities Heinz wanted to facilitate: the creative landscape (labs and open office floor), the public landscape (testing and break-out) and the production landscape (pilot plant). All three landscapes are housed in a two storey building in which both floors are connected with a large central staircase in a light and colorful atrium in order to stimulate people to walk around and accidentally meet. Sustainability and and optimum “fit for purpose” were the driving forces in the design, architecturally and technically.
